Opening Reception for The Printed Bird Exhibit

September 12 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Join us in the Sally Newkirk Gallery at the Cultural Arts Center on Thursday, September 12, 2024 as we open The Printed Bird: 500 Hundred Years of Birds in Fine Books.

In this exhibition, we explore the history of bird imagery and ornithology through outstanding book plates produced through the fine art of printmaking. Drawing upon works in the collections of the Floyd County Library and the private collections of Raymond Graf and Albertus Gorman this will be a comprehensive survey of the great bird publications and artists like John James Audubon, Jacques Barraband, Edward Lear, and others who helped contribute to what we know about birds. The exhibition begins with the invention of the printing press in the 15th century and continues through the first quarter of the 20th century. Exhibition dates are September 12, 2024 and continue through January 16, 2025.

The Printed Bird will be displayed alongside Mothering Me, an exhibit celebrating mothers who are artists. Mothering Me will be on display in the East and West galleries from September 19th, 2024 through January 4th, 2025.

Join us for our “Art History Illustrated” talk series, held the third Thursday of every month at 5:30 p.m. This monthly illustrated talk series is presented by art historian Brenda Edgar, in collaboration with The Floyd County Carnegie Library Cultural Arts Center.
