You may have a favorite wat to eat on injera bread, but did you know that Ethiopia is truly exceptional among African nations for its long history of (almost) total independence? In this talk, art historian Brenda Edgar will survey the medieval Ethiopian empire, known as Abyssinia, Christian from the 4th century, which created stunning illuminated manuscripts and rock-cut churches, particularly under the Emperor Lalibela. Then you’ll follow the story into the 20th century, when Italy’s occupation of Ethiopia would feed into the cult of Emperor Haile Selassie and Rastafarian culture. This program is intended for adults.
