Art History Illustrated: Ancient Egyptian Funerary Art

October 17 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm

It is true that Ancient Egyptian culture remained remarkably consistent over its 3000-year history, but a very linear story can still be told about its funerary practices and associated arts. Art historian Brenda Edgar will examine predynastic human sacrifice; trace the development of the pyramid in the Old Kingdom; follow the evolution of funerary texts; and tour the great New Kingdom Mortuary Temples. A special highlight will be getting to know ancient Egyptian mummies, including nonroyal and nonhuman examples. As we’ll see, tomb painting, sculpture, and hieroglyphic texts give us profound insight into Egyptian attitudes toward both Death and Life.

This monthly illustrated talk series is presented by art historian Brenda Edgar, in collaboration with The Floyd County Carnegie Library Cultural Arts Center.
